UFC could be ushering in a new era
It seemed as if interim championships were on their way out as several were vacated or abandoned, but injuries and suspensions to Robert Whittaker and Khabib Nurmagomedov have forced the company’s hand.
Many expected former interim champion Tony Ferguson to be back in the title fold while Khabib was on the shelf and suspended, but personal issues have prevented that. Instead, an interim championship will be established, with Featherweight Champion Max Holloway moving up to take on Dustin Poirier for the right to face Nurmagomedov.
Much of the same is unfolding at Middleweight. Robert Whittaker had a recent surgery that has him sidelined, but both Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya lay claim to the top contender spot. They’ll do battle at UFC 236 for that interim title.
Elsewhere on the show, Ovince Saint Preux and Nikita Krylov will run back their fight from five years ago.

UFC 236: Holloway vs. Poirier 2 is an upcoming mixed martial arts event produced by the Ultimate Fighting Championship that is scheduled to be held on April 13, 2019 at the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, Georgia.
This will be the first UFC pay-per-view to not be sold through U.S. television providers for residential customers. Per an extension of its new rights agreements with ESPN through 2025, UFC pay-per-views are now distributed exclusively through ESPN+, and viewers must have an active subscription to the service in order to purchase and stream the event. At the same time, the price of the PPV was lowered from $64.99 to $59.99, and a promotional offer was launched allowing new subscribers to purchase a bundle of the PPV and a one-year subscription to ESPN+ for $20 more.
This event was originally expected to be headlined by former UFC Interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson and current UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway however the bout failed to materialize. UFC 236 is now expected to be headlined by an interim UFC Lightweight Championship bout between current UFC Featherweight Champion Max Holloway and Dustin Poirier. The two previously met in a featherweight bout at UFC 143 where Poirier won by submission in the first round.
An interim UFC Middleweight Championship bout between The Ultimate Fighter: Team Jones vs. Team Sonnen middleweight winner Kelvin Gastelum and Israel Adesanya has also been slated for the event and is expected to serve as the co-headliner.
A bantamweight bout between Boston Salmon and Khalid Taha was initially scheduled for The Ultimate Fighter: Heavy Hitters Finale. However, the pairing was removed from the card for undisclosed reasons and has instead been rescheduled for this event.
Paige VanZant was briefly linked to a matchup with Poliana Botelho at the event. However, just days after the pairing was leaked, VanZant announced that she would not be competing on the card due to a fractured right arm. Botelho is expected to remain on the card against Lauren Mueller.
